LIFE AND POWER

As I sit here in my sunroom, I can see “liquid sunshine”. This Memorial Day has been pretty outside until about five o’clock. Now a nice steady rain is falling. We are in a time when the land here needs rain. The gardens and lakes should flourish after these few days of precipitation.

Water is necessary for living things to grow. So is light. And soil. But there has to be a connection that provides a source of power. One day I found this pretty poplar flower on the road. It had fallen from the tall poplar trees above. Knowing that I could not return the flower too its place on the tree, I began to look around for another source of power.

There was a fire hydrant nearby that contains lots of water. Fire hydrants are necessary to provide water to protect people and homes when there is a fire. As I am writing this, I hear sirens from fire trucks. Those firemen could come and water my flower, but that would keep them from saving someone in need. So . . . this fire hydrant by itself was of no use in helping the flower.

Then I saw an electrical box. It helps to bring power through underground lines to my house. Since those lines go through the dirt, maybe this box can help my flower to live. This electricity is also the source of light for my home. Hmm . . .  but once again no way to keep my flower alive from this source.

Next, I noticed the mailbox. It is a symbol of the government of our country. Surely something so powerful as to represent an entire nation could do something to help one little flower, but, alas, other than being a place to show its beauty, there was no assistance.

These last two pictures show the difference between having life, and no source of life or power. The flower just shriveled and died! What about you? Where is your source?

This little story may seem silly to some, but I hope it will allow you to think about the source of power and life for not just plants or even animals. As Christians our source of life is the Creator, God the Father. New life comes through Jesus, the Son. Spiritual power comes from the Holy Spirit.

Recently we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. Read the book of Acts to learn more about power, especially chapters one and two.
